CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:The major chemical constituents are curcuminoids (approx.6%), the yellow colouring principles of which curcumin constitutes 50-60% ; essential oil (2-7%) with high content of bisabolane derivatives.The minor components include desmethoxycurumin,bidesmethoxycurcumin, dihydrocurcumin,phytosterols, fatty acids, polysaccharides.The important colouring matter is curcumin.It also contains an aromatic oil ,turmeric oil.The essential oil contains d-phellanderene-1% , d-sabinene-0.6%, cincol-1%, borneol-.5%, zingiberene-25%,sesquiterpenes-58%.

MORPHOLOGY:Annual shrub , rhizome grows underground.Root ovoid,sessile,tubers thick,cylindric ,light yellow inside.leafy tuft 1-1.5 m ,petiole as long as blade.Peduncle 1.5 m or more ,hidden by the sheathing petiole.Flowers in dense compound spikes crowned by a coma of coloured enlarged bracts; lower bracts ovate, membranous , enclosing severalbracteolate fugitive flowers which open in succession.Spikes 10-12cm long,5cm in diameter,flower bracts pale green.those of the coma tinged with pink; flowers as long as bracts ,pale yellow.Calyx short, cylindric, sepals free and imbricate, whitish, obtusely toothed .corolla tube funnel shaped.Stamens forming petaloid staminoides.Ovary 3-celled,many ovuled; style filliform, stigma 2-lipped,lips ciliate.


MEDICAL PROPERTIES:
EXTERNAL: Local application of turmeric is anti-inflammatory, analgesic and complexion enhancer.The volatile oil extract have anti-arthritic property.It cures skin disorders,has wound  cleaning and healing properties and has anti microbial property.Turmeric smoke relieves hiccups,lower respiratory tract diseases and also relives pain due to scorpion bite. The essential oil from rhizomes is antimicrobial,antifungal and antihelmenthic.The tubers are applied externally to bruises and sprains ,to skin eruptions and infections, urticaria,pruritis and sheetapitta.
INTERNAL:Turmeric paste taken internally is a good antidote for scorpion bite.The decoction is administered in biliary gastritis.Fresh rhizome contain curcumol and curdione which show inhibitory activity on sarcoma.The rhizome is appetizer ,carminative,staomachic,laxative ,diuretic,expectorant, stimulant,febrifuge ,ophthalmic and tonic.
NERVOUS  SYSTEM:It is a good analgesic.In case of injury a mixture of turmeric and jaggery is orally used to reduce pain and promote circulation.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:Turmeric is appetizer,laxative,cholagogue and anthelmintic. So it is used in treating dyspepsia,hepatitis,constipation,ascites and worms.
CIRCULATORY SYATEM:Turmeric stimulates blood formation ,circulation and also haemostatic.It is useful in treating anemia ,bleeding disorders and other blood diseases.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:Turmeric is an expectorant.Kapha developed due to drinking milk and other ailments due to kapha can be treated with turmeric.Inhalation of turmeric smoke reduces kapha.
URINARY SYSTEM:Its good diuretic but this action is carried out by digestion of ama,kapha and meda.Turmeric should be used in form of decoction or powder in prameha.Bhasma of tin triturated with turmeric is effective for prameha.
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM:It  has purifying effect on uterus and breast milk so is useful in postpartum period and also useful in shukrameha.
DOSE:Juice of fresh rhizome :10-20ml
          Powder  of dry drug :1-3 grams


FORMULATIONS:Haridrakhanda, Kalyanawaleha, Pathyadi Kwatha, Panchamnimba Churna, Dashamoola Taila, Marichadya Taila ,Vyaghri Taila ,Vridhidhara Lepa.

HERBAL REMEDIES:

  • Massaging the scalp with Haridra and Daruharidra mixed with butter alleviates itching of the scalp in lice infestations.
  • Gargle with warm haridra water two to three times a day relieves sore throat.
  • For sore eyes and conjunctivitis take one teaspoon of Haridra powder boiled with a cup of water; strained and used as eye wash.
  • Apply turmeric powder pounded in juice of tamarind leaves as an armpit deodorant.
  •  Apply turmeric powder mixed with milk for radiant and smooth complexion.
  • Turmeric scrub is used as a facial tonic for treatment of Acne Vulgaris.
  • An equal amount of Haridra powder and Amalaki extract obtained by pounding can be taken empty stomach acts as an adjuvant in Diabetes.
